Wayne Shorter
(August
25, 1933 - )
An American jazz saxophonist , he is considered to be one
of the most important jazz artists and songwriters of his
generation. He served as musical director for Art Blakey and
the Jazz Messengers before joining the Miles Davis Quintet in
1964. He later co-founded the group Weather Report along with
fellow Davis alum Joe Zawinul.
Shorter has
performed with Joni Mitchell, Carlos Santana and Don
Henley. He has won nine Grammy Awards® and was honored by
the National Endowment for the Arts as a Jazz Master in 1998.
