1. Artist name:
Jeanee L. Wallace, Kansas City, Mo.
2. Occupation:
Graphic designer for Hallmark Cards, Inc.
3. Main art form:
That’s a hard question. I’m a jack of all trades. Besides being a
graphic designer, I started sewing April of 2007 and I found out
that I was a natural at the craft. So I started making aprons and
selling them under the name dirty laundry.
I also screen-print. I haven’t sat down and made designs for myself.
I’d like to make some patterns or designs and screen them on my aprons.
I also do paper crafts. I guess you’d consider it collage. I like
to do Artist Trading Cards (ATCs) to get into the habit of using
my hands. Designing on the computer all day can trap me in a box
(no pun intended).
4. How do you define handcrafted goods as an art form?
Handcrafted goods are a trend that had exploded in the past few years.
Crafting has taken on an elegance from what our moms used to do.
It seems like gals born in the 70s (like myself) are going back
to their roots of making crafts that they made as a little girl.
But now that we’re all grown up there is a quality, sophistication
and elegance to our craft.
I also think that consumers are self-conscious of what they are
buying with the eco-friendly trend. A lot of crafters use recycled
materials, or donate some of their proceeds to a cause. So the consumer
feels like they are doing their part while finding unique items.
5. Goals
My current goals are to be more consistent with making aprons. I’d
like to keep my Etsy shop updated more often. Trying some new designs
and new fabric. I’m looking forward to the Crafty Chicks show this
November and doing the RedLine AIDS benefit fashion show next year.
