Intricate Work Appeals to Artist

Barbara McCreery, Kansas City, Kan., is a professional landscaper, but for seven years, she has found more enthusiasm in creating dioramas and sequined-laden Styrofoam/paper cakes. The dioramas started when a friend gave her a box of shells and McCreery created a mermaid diorama.

“Some of the dioramas are humorous and some are a little twisted,” she says. “I just hope no one really calls them cute. I want people to be amused by my work.”

The pastries are intricate. McCreery says she would love to see her works in cabinets decorating bakery shops. A big cake takes about two to three weeks to create, but the cupcakes take a couple of hours.

“I am not formally trained, but I like to be creative,” she says. “When I get an idea, I usually have to run with it.” McCreery is also a member of the Kansas City Artists Coalition.
