The 2008 Kansas City String Quartet Program summer program will
mark 15 years this July and will again offer two, one-week camps
to approximately 60 students. “We cultivate all of our
students toward distinction through string quartet playing and
performance,” says Elizabeth Suh Lane, the program’s artistic
director. “We teach them to listen, to watch and to play in a
way that most of them have probably never done before.”
This regional program will be held at the campus of Pembroke
Hill School July 28 through Aug. 9. The camps are designed
for young musicians who are committed to artistic excellence
through cooperative study and performance of chamber music. It
brings together artists from all over the country to interact
with highly talented string musicians who have the opportunity
to play and learn from others their own age.
Several events will mark the 15th Anniversary celebration, including
a faculty concert on Aug. 8 at the Kauffman Foundation featuring
American composer Tina Davidson. The concert is free and
open to the public.
In addition, the faculty will choose at least one outstanding
student ensemble to be featured during the faculty concert held
Aug. 1 at the Kauffman Foundation.
Another
15th anniversary special event is the opportunity for students and faculty
to work with Davidson. She will introduce students to composing and the life
of a contemporary American composer, and will perform her composition “Paper,
Glass, String, Wood” in concert 2:30 p.m., Aug. 9 at Pembroke Hill School.
Each summer, Suh Lane says she sees the students grow both musically
and personally in the short time they are together. “The
students are less sure when they come into the program,” she
says. “And from day one, through the week’s succession, then
to the concert, it’s like there is a huge mountain they have
been able to climb.”
